Cinco de Mayo is not an important day in Mexico, in this day people normally attend their activities and barley notice that this is a remembrance day. My twitter timeline is invaded by a little earthquake that occurred this morning , not a single mention to the special Mexican- American Holiday.Although 5 de Mayo is important day that the USA has marked in their calendars as the Mexican holiday by excellence.

At south of their border the real national holiday is September the 16th, the day that the New Spain got it’s independence from Spain. This day you see an enormous  popular fiesta in the streets.The popular verbena is extended to the Mexican embassies and consulates all over the world.A little tip for you, if in your town their is one , go and celebrate the night of the 15th to turn on the 16th of September , they are most of the times affairs open to the public ,the reason: Mexicans can steel have their fiesta, were they can taste food, tequila, cerveza, music, dance and give the grito homeland style.

However 5 de Mayo is important for the USA. The reason? Because this is the day that Mexicans won a battle against the french , which meant that french people was kicked out from Mexico. This country received aid from the north border army because they wanted to keep America for the Americans . They didn’t want another superpower in the continent. They were afraid that Mexico was going to be part or alley of France.Twenty years before Mexico had lost it’s territories against the USA , so the two countries were not in the best of terms, but by fearing and seeing the possibility of loosing more territories the Mexican elite accepted the North American help.

In the present time many Mexicans along with other migrants from all over center and south america cross the northern border trying to achieve a better life by working. In this process they loose physical contact with their families and many traditions too. Therefore 5 de Mayo is the day were they are aloud by North American society to remember openly their origins,celebrate their Mexicanity and along with them.This is the day were newly born Mexican Americans, Mexicans leaving in the States found a new identity as a new population in a new nation and find a new point of encounter between them .It is the day they kicked out another superpower leaving the continent as Monroe proposed it.
